Sony and Samsung both announced 48-megapixel image sensors designed for smartphones earlier this year,now device manufactures have started using these massive pixel arrays in their devices. Chinese telecom giant Huawei's most successful brand Honor is the first to introduce 48MP camera phones in India, followed by another chinese company Xiomi .

Honor V20, one of the world’s first phones to feature a big 48-megapixel camera comes with a triple-rear camera setup using Sony sensors.Apart from a big 48-megapixel camera, Honor V20 comes with a punch hole on the screen to accommodate the selfie camera.The device is priced at Rs. 37,999 for 6GB128GB variant and Rs. 45,999 for 8GB,256GB variant.

Redmi Note 7 Pro features 48MP+5MP dual rear camera, 13MP front camera and 4,000 mAh battery. The 4GB RAM or 64GB internal memory and 6GB RAM or 128GB internal memory variants will go on sale from March 13 and priced from Rs.13,999.

Huawei to launch first 5G smartphone by mid 2019

At its Global Analyst Summit 2018 in Shenzhen,China, Huawei detailed its plans to release its first 5G-enabled smartphone in the second half of 2019.

Huawei aims outsmart it's western counterparts in 5G roll out revealing plans to launch a handset next year packing the firm’s very own 5G modem.

Huawei recently revealed the Balong 5G01 chip in February at MWC 2018, in Barcelona. The company claims the model is capable of 2.3Gbps bandwidth.

This particular model is designed for mobile hotspots and self-driving cars. However, it is also working on modems exclusively for use in 5G smartphone.

Huawei’s 5G NR products have passed TÜV SÜD's (the European Union's certification authority) strict verification requirements after several rounds of rigorous testing and evaluation. As a leading information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, Huawei is now the first company to achieve a CE type examination certificate (TEC) for its 5G products.

If Tech rumors are correct, first 5G handset would be from Huawei mate series.

Samsung signed a strategic agreement with Qualcomm that covered the “transition to 5G".This tells that Samsung is also keen on 5G hansets.Samsung had previously earmarked 2019 for its first 5G handsets. Qualcomm already has its own modem called the X50 for mobile devices recently managed to hit speeds of 4.51 gigabits per second.

Intel announced a partnership with Microsoft, Dell, HP, and Lenovo to create 5G-enabled laptops based on Intel's own modems.

5G handset challenges

  • Building a 5G smartphone is more challenging than 3G or 4G as these will include multi-modes (2G,3G,4G,4.9G, 5G SA/NSA).Packing multiple antennas and chipsets into a single device is tough and challenging.
  • 5G uses Millimeter wave bands (26, 28, 38, and 60 GHz)., which makes the RF integration and positioning more complicated.Designing boards  for RF is challenging.
  • 5G network data speed will be 1-10Gb. 5G phone needs 5x more processing power and 2.5x more power consumption.Currently available batteries are not a good choice for 5 handsets.

IBM creates ‘world’s smallest computer’ that’s smaller than a grain of salt

Recently during IBM Think 2018, the company's flagship conference, IBM unveiled what it claims is the world's smallest computer.The finished computer is smaller than a grain of salt.First of all let me tell you this tiny device is not for PC or smartphone.It has got some specific applications.

How much computing power tiny chip is embedded with?
It has the same computing power as Intel’s X86 chip from the 90s.It contains around million transistors.You may be wondering what we are going to do with such a small computing power.There comes the blockchain.

IBM’s new computer, contains up to 1 million transistors, along with a small amount of static random access memory(RAM), a light-emitting diode (LED) and photo-detector that allow it to communicate, and an integrated photovoltaic(Solar cell) cell for power.

IBM claims that it is “small enough and cheap enough to be put anywhere—and everywhere.”
The computer will cost less than 0.10$ to manufacture.On mass production it will reduce further.

According to the company, the device will be a data source for anti-fraud blockchain applications.
Block chain is nothing but distributed decentralized database/Ledger that is nearly impossible to tamper.Blockchain became popular with bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. Specifically, this computer will be a data source for blockchain applications. It's intended to help track the shipment of goods and detect theft, fraud, and non-compliance.It can also do basic AI tasks, such as sorting the data it's given.

"Within the next five years, cryptographic anchors — such as ink dots or tiny computers smaller than a grain of salt — will be embedded in everyday objects and devices. They’ll be used in tandem with blockchain’s distributed ledger technology to ensure an object’s authenticity from its point of origin to when it reaches the hands of the customer. These technologies pave the way for new solutions that tackle food safety, authenticity of manufactured components, genetically modified products, identification of counterfeit objects and provenance of luxury goods".says IBM head of research Arvind Krishna.

Lenovo: Moto

Lenovo may unveil next-gen Moto line G6 model considering that G5 was launched during last year.According to the leaks, there will be a standard Moto G6, a Moto G6 Plus, and a Moto G6 Play.

Rumours point to a Moto Z3 and Z3 Play with 6in, 18:9 borderless screens at 1080p resolution and another Z3 model may release at Quad HD resolution.


Nokia 9 to launch at MWC 2018

Nokia's smartphone comeback story has not been great so far. HMD Global has launched a series of smart phones and feature phones with NOKIA brand name after it's take over,but they failed to launch something new and innovative. Nokia 8 was the latest in android smartphone series from HMD Global . But we're hoping the Nokia 9 is the phone to finally make the NOKIA brand handset pioneer again.

Nokia 9 will be a high-end flagship smartphone by the company .Nokia 9 is rumoured to come with a 5.30-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1440 pixels by 2560 pixels.Primary camera may have 22MB pixel .It is powered by a quad core processor and 4GB RAM and 64 GB inbuilt memory.Online leakers suggest that Nokia 9 will have dual curved edge bezel-less display with double-sided 3D glass design. The phone will get a rear-mounted circular fingerprint sensor.It is expected that phone will come with dual cameras on the front as well. Nokia 9 will feature reduced bezels on top and bottom of the screen.
Nokia 8 Pro, Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 4 and Nokia 1 are also expected to be announced at the event.


There are speculations that the Chinese smartphone maker will launch the Mi 7 as its next flagship.The official Mobile World Congress site confirms Xiaomi as one of the exhibitors at MWC 2018.However, it is unclear whether the they would launch some new models or just the upgrade to older versions.

December 2017, Xiaomi at the second annual Snapdragon Technology Summit in Hawaii announced that the Mi 7 will be the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 processors.Xiaomi Mi 7 is rumoured to sport a face unlock feature.This would be similar to Face ID feature in iPhone X.For better photography, the smartphone is likely to come with a dual rear camera setup.

Asus at MWC 2018

Asus has confirmed that it will launch a new version of its ZenFone smartphone during Mobile World Congress - the ZenFone 5.
It tweeted a save-the-date announcement, with an image of a giant, swirling "5".

Wearables and Health Monitoring equipment

Lot of companies researching in wearable health monitoring have registered for MWC this year. So we can expect some sporty wearables at MWC 2018.

MicroLED is the latest in he emerging display technologies .Starting from CRT, through LCD,LED ,OLED and mLED, display technology is evolving at higher speed. mLED displays consist of arrays of microscopic LEDs forming the individual pixel elements. It has got lot of advantages over other existing display technologies.

Micro LED was first realised by in the year 2000 by a research group run by Prof. Hongxing Jiang and Prof. Jingyu Lin of the Texas Tech University.

Let us recall the basic structure of LED display.
An LED display is a flat panel display, which uses an array of light-emitting diodes as pixels for a video/picture display.As you know an LED( light-emitting diode) is a p-n junction which emits light when electric current is passed through it.In an LED dispaly panel , these LEDs are shrunk down dramatically and arranged in red, green and blue clusters to create an individual pixel that can reproduce white light and various colors.

LED displays are used in large displays like leaderboards,advertising pannels etcc.  LED TVs and Smartphones displays are usually LCD with LED back-light. Usually consumers think that LED TVs have LED display. It is LED backlit LCD. But, OLED and micro-LED ae self illuminating.

In an OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diode), a thin layer of organic material is placed between two conductors, which is then used to produce light when a current is applied.At least one of these electrodes is transparent.Properties of these organic material is analogous to semiconductors.

Micro-LED isn't a new display technology, this technology is a solution to the problem faced by panel manufacturers.It helped them to mass transfer and bond million of tiny LEDs in a minimum area.Individual micro-LEDs usually ranges from 1 to 10 μm, and are transferred in large volumes onto the display substrate.

MicroLED (µLED) is formed by the integration of light control elements directly with light producing source. This optical component results in a high extraction efficiency and all the light exiting through a single surface of the LEDs.The MicroLED ( µLED) is optimised for flip-chip mounting. This results in excellent heat-sinking of the device and reduced thermal effects in the light source.

Above design was patented by infiLED later acquired by Oculus. In their design parabolic reflectors collimates the light and directs it through a single surface of the device. Larger illumination areas can be obtained by densely packing and filling a die with the parabolic structures, effectively giving a MicroLED cluster or LED with all the pixels working in concert.

 Advantages of micro-LED over TFT-LCD and OLED displays

-High contrast ratio. In backlit TFT-LCD panels complete black is not possible.Black is represented by dark grey only. This is because back-light cannot be switched off it completely. But microLED is self illuminating. So pure black can be obtained by switching off the individual micro-LED. This is one of the main advantage of micro-LED displays.

-Improved brightness to power (lux/W) efficiency, meaning that the same panel brightness can be achieved for lower power.Power consumption can be 90 percent lower than LCD and up to 50 percent lower than OLED

-Micro-LED displays will also offer a longer lifespan than current OLED panels. Lifespan of the organic materials used to make the blue OLED is limited.

-Higer resolution in compact form and higher PPI. This makes them perfect for smartphones and VR displays

-High response times in the ns (microsecond) range.This feature make them suitable for VR headsets.

-Suitable for flexible displays.It's tiny structure can be deposited on a flexible substrate to form flexible display panels. Unlike TFT-LCD and OLED , damage would be minimum on bending or rolling.

Disadvantages of micro-LED pannels

-Micro-LED panels are expected to be considerably more expensive, possibly three to four times higher than current LCD and OLED panels.This will fall in time, but it will slow down the investments.

Current trends in micro-LED panels

2010 onwards , manufacturers are aggressively behind micro-LED display technology R&D. Manufacturers leading in micro-LED patent applications include Apple affiliated Luxvue, Mikro Mesa, Sony, Leti and others.
-Sony launched its 55-inch “Crystal LED Display” in 2012, a new micro LED display technology utilizing Full HD Resolution. The display uses about 6.22 million micro LEDs
-Samsung unveiled its first MicroLED TV at CES 2018, the 146-inch "The Wall" 4K TV.
Commercial launch of large microLED panels would take some time since manufactures have to limit the cost within a limit to make it suitable for consumer electronic devices.
-Mass transfer is a critical technology for Micro LED manufacturing, transferring Micro LED to a target backplane quickly and accurately will be one of the topics that manufacturers need to work on the most.

First Flexible Display

Flexible electronic paper (e-paper) based displays were the first flexible displays conceptualized and prototyped. This form of flexible displays has a long history.Many companies attempted but failed to design slated for mass production that can be used in consumer electronics. One of the notable among such prototypes was Gyricon put forth by Xerox PARC. Still mass production of e-paper  is expensive.

How Gyricon e-paper works?

Gyricon contains a lots of small spherical beads, sandwiched in between two thin transparent plastic sheet.The beads, each contained in an oil-filled cavity, are free to rotate within those cavities. The beads are "bichromal", with hemispheres of two contrasting colours (e.g. black and white, red and white).  Each side of the bead has  electrical charge (positive or negative), so they exhibit an electrical dipole. When voltage is applied to the surface of the sheet, the beads rotate to present one coloured side to the viewer. Voltages can be applied to the surface to create images such as text and picture.

 They remain fixed in position until another electrical charge is applied to change the orientation of the beads. So, there is no need of power after text/picture is written.This e-paper can be erased and rewrite infinite time(theoretically) by applying corresponding voltages.

Current trends in flexible and foldable displays 

Recently  flexible display market has gained great momentum owing to the competition and usage in various areas likes mobile phones, laptops and other handheld consumer electronic devices. Due to the advent of advanced materials and new technologies, display market is evolving at higher speed.

OLED based flexible displays have gained more attention than any other flexible display technology. Many leading companies have displayed their version of flexible displays in recent times. Apart from prototypes commercial production is yet to begin. Even though there  are many challenges and hurdles  in incorporating  flexible displays in consumer electronics,tech giants  like LG, Samsung, Sharp and Sony are in the brim of it. Commercial release of such display based electronic devices are expected in the last quarter of 2018.

CES 2013: Samsung flexible phone prototype unveiled

Samsung unveiled its flexible phone prototype, running Windows Phone 8 and branded Youm, during a keynote at CES .On stage at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the prototype phone was shown being flexed and bent without any conspicuous colour distortion, with other pre-recorded demonstrations shown on film.
Samsung has been working on flexible displays for a number of years, but its latest demonstration was the first to prove it has already talked to other companies about how it might implement flexible displays.

Recently Samsung has unveiled a radical 9.1-inch stretchable display .A flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen which could stretch in both direction by as much as 12 millimetres might spell out a new era in phone screen technology, the report says.
Samsung says the stretchy screen will be useful for everything from wearables to in-car displays, and could also lead to a new generation of wearable devices that can be knocked or dropped and simply move back into place.

Samsung Galaxy X: Rumors and news leaks

Samsung has long been rumored to be prepping the Galaxy X for a release sometime in 2017.
Samsung will “test the waters” with the limited run prototype, which may launch in 2018.
The phone is described as having two OLED display panels with a hinge in the middle. Screens without bezels, like the ones used on the Galaxy S8, may be used to create a seamless, one-screen look.

 Apple seeks new patent for folding displays

The US Patent & Trademark Office has published an Apple patent application for a foldable display. This follows earlier rumors that the company was working with LG on a future foldable iPhone.
‘An electronic device may have a flexible portion that allows the device to be folded. The device may have a flexible display. The flexible display may have a bending region that allows the display to bend along a bend axis when the device is folded’.Patent describes.

The patent describes a display that can be ‘opened and closed like a book’ .Display may include an array of display pixels formed from liquid crystal display (LCD) components, an array of electrophoretic display pixels, an array of organic light-emitting diode display pixels, an array of pixels formed from crystalline semiconductor light-emitting diode dies (sometimes referred to as micro-LEDs), an array of electrowetting display pixels, or display pixels based on other display technologies.

LG’s  unveiled its latest OLED screen which is  transparent and flexible

On June 22 2017 LG announced that it’s created the world’s first flexible, transparent 77-inch OLED display.  display is 77 inches on the diagonal with an aspect ratio of 16:9.The screen has a UHD resolution of 3840 x 2160, offers up to 40 percent transparency, and can be fixed with a curvature of up to 80 degrees.

 On LG’s official website, it is see that company’s goal is to start mass production of FHD Curved OLED and Wide area flexible display by end of 2017.

Currently based on the information available LG is the front runner in flexible display technology. Partnership between Apple and LG in display production  proves above statement to be true.

Apart from above tech giant,s few Chinese entities like ITRI and BOE have invested in flexible display field.

In 2016, Lenovo unveiled working prototypes of bendable smartphones and tablets. The project was codenamed CPlus. You can wear it around your wrist like a smartwatch.No official release date was announced yet.

ITRI is a nonprofit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical services in Taiwan.
ITRI institute demonstrated a new foldable AMOLED display prototype, saying that its technology is rapidly approaching "commercial standards". It’s developers claims “ITRI has developed a transparent OLED display based on its FlexUP™ substrate. With the advantages of being flexible and transparent, this technology could be utilized in automotive display, e.g. on windshield glass and side windows. This transparent OLED display offers enhanced user experience in the automotive display and thus opens an opportunity for the next generation display. BOE Display's latest flexible and foldable AMOLED display prototypes

Chinese firm BOE Display(BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd.) demonstrated its first batch of flexible OLED panels made at its new B7 6-Gen OLED fab in Chengdu.  . The production line is the world’s second production line for flexible AMOLED panels and China’s first. The line is expected to break the monopoly enjoyed by Korean companies  Samsung, LG and others. Already, there are indications that Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, Vivo and other OEMs are showing interests in patronizing the BOE AMOLED display.  Watch video BOE flexible display 

Conclusion: After going through the latest developments and news and considering the fact that technology is evolving faster than ever, it is obvious that by the end of 2018 foldable and smartphones will hit the market. Already LG has rolled out curved/flexible display panels suitable for TVs, but incorporating flexible displays with handheld devices pose no of challenges. For mass production price also need to be contained. In coming years more researches, investments  and innovations are expected in this field.

Besides fingerprint and facial recognition, eye scanning is one of the widely used biometric identification. Iris recognition retinal scanning are the two types of eye recognition method.Iris recognition is a method of biometric identification that uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on images of one or both of the irises of an individual's eyes. complex Iris pattern of each person is unique, stable, and can be seen from some distance. What is Iris

The iris is a thin, circular structure in the eye, responsible for controlling the size of the pupils and thus the amount of light reaching the retina. The color of the iris defines the eye color.

How Iris scanning and recognition is done

An automated iris recognition system can be subdivided in to 3 major parts:-¨ 

1.Image acquisition : To acquire image of iris with sufficient resolution .Image acquisition is done by either a digital camera or NIR(Near Infrared) camera.

2.Iris Localization: To delemit the iris from the rest of the image. When the camera takes a picture, the computer locates: The center of the pupil
  • The edge of the pupil
  • The edge of the iris
  • The eyelids and eyelashes
System will exclude eyelids, eyelashes, and specular reflections that often block parts of the iris.
After localization image will only contain pixels of Iris.

But images of Iris captured under different light intensity will not be the same. When eye is exposed to more light pupil will contract with the help of Iris and at low light pupil will be dilated.

This problem is addressed by a normalization method known as rubber sheet model.This model was developed by Daugman ,a professor at Harvard university. In simple words , this normalization procedure converts a circular shape (Iris) image into rectangular shape. Technically speaking a mathematical tansform is applied on the image to transform it from polar coordinates to Cartesian coordinates.

3.Pattern matching: The Iris pattern derived from this process is compared with previously stored template.

Advantages and disadvantages of Iris recognition

The iris of the eye has been described as the ideal part of the human body for biometric identification for several reasons.It has got many advantages over other biometric recognition like fingerprint matching, retina scanning, vein recognition etc..

Advantages of Iris scanning and recognition

  • It is an internal organ that is well protected against damage and wear by a highly transparent and sensitive membrane (the cornea). This distinguishes it from fingerprints, which can be difficult to recognize after years of certain types of manual labor.
  • Even genetically identical individuals (and the left and right eyes of the same individual) have completely independent iris textures
  • Non-invasive: An iris scan is similar to taking a photograph and can be performed from about 10 cm to a few meters away. Illumination source is normal light or low energy infrared which is not harmful to human eyes. Retina scan is more invasive than iris scan.’’
  • Iris recognition works with clear contact lenses, eyeglasses, and non-mirrored sunglasses.

Disadvantages of iris scanners

  • Many commercial iris scanners can be easily fooled by a high quality image of an iris or face in place of the real thing.
  • The accuracy of scanners can be affected by changes in lighting. Iris scanners are significantly more expensive than some other forms of biometrics
  • Modern cataract surgery can cause change iris texture in such a way that iris pattern recognition is no longer feasible or the probability of falsely rejected subjects is increased.

Retinal scanning is one of the most well-known biometric technologies. A retinal scan relies on unique physiological characteristics of the eye to identify an individual. Before we go into the working of retina scanner let us have a look at what is retina

What is retina?

The retina is a thin tissue composed of neural cells and thin blood vessels that is located in the posterior portion of the eye. The purpose of the retina is to receive light that the lens has focused, convert the light into neural signals, and send these signals on to the brain for visual recognition.

Because of the complex structure of the capillaries that supply the retina with blood, each person's retina is unique. The network of blood vessels in the retina is not entirely genetically dictated. Even identical twins do not share a similar retinal pattern. Retinal biometric exploits this uniqueness.

Working of a retinal scanner

A retinal scan is performed by projecting a beam of low-energy infrared light into a person’s eye as they look through the scanner’s eyepiece This infrared light beam traces a circular path on the retina at the back of the eye. The blood-filled capillaries absorb more of the infrared light than the surrounding tissue. Because of this, there is a variation in the intensity of the reflection.

Instead of storing complete image ,the scanner measures this reflection at difference points along the beam path.

A standard scanner measures reflection at 320 points. It then assigns an intensity grade between zero and 4,095. The resulting numbers are compressed into an 80-byte computer code and stored in data base.We have already seen that retina blood vessel pattern of each person is unique. So chances of spoofing is so little.

Retina scanning is often confused with iris recognition. Even though both rely on unique physiological attributes of the eye to identify an individual,there are certain differences in the way they work.

The iris is a thin, circular structure in the eye, responsible for controlling the size of the pupils and thus the amount of light reaching the retina. The color of the iris defines the eye color.

Iris Recognition uses a camera, which is similar to any digital camera(NIR:Near InfraRed camera), to capture an image of the Iris.

Iris scanner uses mathematical pattern-recognition techniques on images of the irises of an individual’s eyes, whose complex random patterns are unique and can be seen from some distance.

Nowadays iris scan is preferred over retina scan due to its advantages. While the accuracy of retina scan can be affected by diseases; the iris texture remains extremely stable because it is internal and protected, yet externally visible part of the eye.

  • Less tampered: Since iris is inside our body chances of tampering is very less.
  • Less chances of theft since it is always inside your body.
  • High accuracy: error rate is one in million
  • Speedy results: Identity of the subject is verified very quickly.
  • They do not require as much computer memory as other biometrics like fingerprint scan, voice recognition etc..
  • Invasive:Retina scan requires a very close encounter with the scanning device by using a beam of light deep inside the eye which is considered to be invasive and this may leads to eye problems.
  • Measurement accuracy can be affected by a disease such as cataracts, severe astigmatism
  • Retinal patterns may be altered in cases of diabetes, glaucoma or retinal degenerative disorders,
  • High equipment cost

Application and uses of retinal scanning

Retinal scan security systems: Retinal scanners are typically used for authentication and identification purposes.It is used by several government agencies including the FBI, CIA, and NASA.. Retinal scanning has been used in prisons, for ATM identity verification

Medical application: Retinography or retinal scanning also has medical applications. Communicable illnesses such as AIDS, syphilis, malaria, chicken pox well as hereditary diseases like leukemia, lymphoma, and sickle cell anemia impact the eyes. Pregnancy also affects the eyes. Likewise, indications of chronic health conditions such as congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis, and cholesterol issues first appear in the eyes.
