How Does a Computer Mouse Works?

Every person reading this article undoubtedly have held a computer mouse in your hand.But how many of you wonder how this little device works.Here we have tried to explain 'how does a computer mouse works?'. Computer mouse is a pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display.Mouse is an HID (Human Interface Device) that makes your computer easy to use.Mouse can also be viewed as a cursor control device.

Types of Computer Mouse

Mainly there are two types of 'mouses'. Ball mouse(Mechanical mouse) and Optical mouse.

How does a mechanical mouse work?

How does a ball mouse actually work? As you move it across your desk, the ball rolls and pushes against two plastic rollers(2) mechanically connected to thin wheels (3). One of the wheels detects movements in an back-and-forth direction (say x axis),the other detects side-to-side movements (y-axis).They how they convert this movements into signals?

when you move the mouse, the ball moves the rollers that turn one or both of the wheels. If you move the mouse straight forward or backward, only the x-axis wheel turns; if you move to the right or left, only the y-axis wheel turns. And if you move the mouse at an angle, the ball turns both wheels at once.

Each wheel has slots on their edges , as it turns, the slots repeatedly break a infrared/light beam. The more the wheel turns, the more times the beam is broken. Counting the number of times the beam is broken will give how far the wheel has turned and how far you've moved the mouse. The counting,measuring and calibration are done by the microchip inside the mouse, which sends the signals down the cable to your computer. Software in your computer moves the cursor on your monitor by a corresponding amount.

How Optical mouse works?

Optical mouse working principle is entirely different from that of mechanical mouse.
An optical mouse uses a light source, typically a light-emitting diode (LED)/LASER, and a light detector, such as an array of photodiodes, to detect movement relative to a surface.

Typical optical mouse has three major parts, a light source(LED), light guiding channel(Plastic LENS) and light detector(CMOS array).

In most of the optical mouse RED LED is the light source.Plastic light guide(LENS) channels the light from the LED at an angle, down onto the desk. Light-detector chip measures light reflected back up from the desk.This CMOS light detector is a low resolution Camera.

This CMOS array takes successive images of the surface on which the mouse operates.This successive images will be processed by a DSP(Digital signal processor).Successive images will have only small differences.So, it is possible to determine in which direction mouse has moved by comparing this images.As computing power grew cheaper, it became possible to embed more powerful special-purpose image-processing chips in the mouse itself.

Assume this is your desktop/mouse pad surface. Let 1,2 and 3 be the images captured by light detector at different instance of time t1,t2 and t3 respectively. If image 3 comes after image 1, we can easily infer that mouse moved towards right side. If image2 follows image1 ,it means mouse has moved towards left.Like this DSP determines direction of movements.

Inertial and gyroscopic mice:Often called "air mice" since they do not require a surface to operate, inertial mice use a tuning fork or other accelerometer to detect rotary movement for every axis supported
3D mice:These devices generally function through ultrasound and provide at least three degrees of freedom.

Why it is impossible to completely ban blue whale challenge ?

It is nearly impossible to ban deadly Blue Challenge,Blue whale is not a game that can be downloaded on PC or mobile

Deadly blue whale challenge game continuing its spree of takings lives across the world.Its recent victim is a 14 year boy from Mumbai,India. Like other participants he ended up with jumping off the terrace of his flat.
It is difficult to trace spread of game since its links are not found on playstore or any other site.
But the Challenge is not a game that can be downloaded on a phone or a website.You can't find a link of blue whale game anywhere on internet.Efforts by cyber experts to locate the game — on Play Store and a series of websites — yielded no results. The challenge can only be undertaken when its creators get in touch with would-be users.

Deadly Blue Whale is a 50-day-challenge.Blue Whale began in Russia in 2013 with "F57", one of the names of the so-called "death group" of the VKontakte social network(a famous social media network among Russian speaking), and allegedly caused its first suicide in 2015..It is believed that the founder of this deadly game is a 22-year-old Russian, Filipp Budeikin,a former psychology student who was expelled from his university,was arrested last November for allegedly inciting teenagers to take their lives.According Filipp Budeikin challenge aimed at "cleansing society" by eliminating "people who are worthless"by pushing them to suicide those he deemed as having no value.

The game gives a task a day — each one potentially fatal — to the player for 50 days.

The game is based on the relationship between the challengers (also called players or participants) and the administrators. It involves a series of duties given by the administrators that players must complete, usually one per day, some of which involve self-mutilation. Some tasks can be given in advance, while others can be passed on by the administrators on that day, the last task being suicide.

The list of tasks, to be completed in 50 days, includes waking up at 4:20 A.M., climbing a crane, carving a specific phrase on the person’s own hand or arm, doing secret tasks, poking a needle to the arm or leg, standing on a bridge and roof, listening to certain type of music, and watching scary and psychedelic videos sent to the challengers by the administrator. 
Th administrators of the game reach out to their victims through different social medias like Instagram,Facebook,WhatsApp or any other online forums.Victims are selected based on their recent social media posts and activities. If your posts speak that you are 'feeling lonely' or ''depressed' ,then you are the perfect target.They will collect maximum personal details about you ,so that they can easily push you towards suicide  through blackmailing or other sort of psychological approaches. 

A journalist from NB Bishkek news (Kyrgystan) writes in a personal account on the website about registering on Instagram as a teenage girl, then making "a couple of naive posts, depressive photos" and specific tags.
"After a day, they knocked. — Are you in Game? — Yes," the journalist writes on NB Bishkek news.

Teenagers are prime targets of this challenge.Why? ,they are willing to do anything to prove/justify/live up to a certain image. During adolescence risk taking behaviour is in its peeks. It is the age during which one seeks his own identity and role in the society and family. To get others attention they will take any risk.

A report by Radio Liberty, a US government-funded broadcasting organisation, said one of their correspondents who had signed up for the challenge as a 15-year-old asked what would happen if she wanted to get out.
The curator replied, "I have all your information. They will come after you."

Instagram and Facebook have come up with measures where a user is directed to a help page when they search for hashtags related to the Blue Whale Challenge.

New bug can crash your iPhone with a single text

The only reason people choose iOS among any other mobile operating systems is its relative security and stability.iOS is generally considered to be secure,but a recently-discovered bug that disables the Messages app reveals that not even Apple’s mobile operating system is free from vulnerabilities.This iMessage bug is discovered by software developer vincedes3, is pretty simple but too malicious.It work on iOS 8 to iOS 10.2.1 b2 (latest version now).Apple iPhone users are worried and they are searching for 'how to block messages on iPhones' and 'how to delete messages on iPhone'

What is bug that crashes your messages on iPhone?

The exploit,involves a complex vCard, which is a transferable Address Book contact.Whereas typical vCards feature 200-300 lines of code, the developer’s vCard reportedly includes 14,281. As a result, when Messages tries to open the vCard, the app crashes.A bug in Apple's iOS won't allow the iMessage app to move past this huge file.

How this iPhone Message crash works.

When you click the vCard received, iOS want to read the text, the text in the file is very complicated for the system and cause a CPU average: the app freeze. You close the app, want to reopen but iOS want to reload the previous message but can’t because it’s the vcf file.

These crashes are not a one-time event, unfortunately — they happen every time you open Messages, since the app tries to open the most recent message. As such, restarting the phone or the app will not work, since the cycle will repeat itself.

Underlying technology of Fingerprint Scanners in smart phones are quite different from ordinary fingerprint sensors.Fingerprint sensors can be broadly classified into two.Optical sensors and capacitive sensors.
An optical fingerprint sensor is an electronic device used to capture a digital image of the fingerprint pattern. This image is digitally processed to create a biometric template (a collection of extracted features) which is stored and used for matching.Fingerprint sensors in modern smartphones are capacitive sensors.
The diagram below shows a simple capacitive finger print sensor. The sensor is an array of tiny sensing cells. Each cell has two conductor plates.Working of this sensors are similar to the working of touch sensors.

The sensor is connected to an electronic circuit which sense even minute current variations.Working of this sensing circuit is beyond the scope of this article.Main component of this sensing circuit is an amplifier which amplifies the minute current variations.You might have studied in your high school physics "The factors affecting capacitance":
  • Plate Area.
  • Plate Spacing ( distance between the plates )
  • Dielectric Material.
Finger you are placing over the sensor will act as dielectric.When finger's ridges are placed over conductive plates, it increase the capacitance between plates, while an air gap(valley) will leave the charge at the capacitor relatively unchanged.In short the capacitor in a cell under a ridge will have a greater capacitance than the capacitor in a cell under a valley.Variation in capacitance will result in current flow.This variation is amplified by the sensing circuit.This analog signals are converted into digital signals using an ADC(Analog to Digital Converters) and required signal processing is carried out to extract the feature of a fingerprint.

AMOLED capacitive Multi-touch Display

AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode):The key component in an LED display types is a Light Emitting Diode (LED)the key component in these display types is a Light Emitting Diode (LED). In an LED display panel these are shrunk down dramatically and arranged in red, green and blue clusters to create an individual pixel that can reproduce white light and various colors.

The O in OLED stands for organic.There are a series of thin organic material films placed between two conductors in each LED, which is then used to produce light when a current is applied.AM part in AMOLED stands in for Active Matrix, rather than a passive matrix technology.In a passive matrix, a complex grid system is used to control individual pixels, where integrated circuits control a charge sent down each column or row. But this is rather slow and can be imprecise. Active Matrix systems attach a thin film transistor (TFT) and capacitor to each LED. This way, when a row and column is activated to access a pixel, the capacitor at the correct pixel can retain its charge in between refresh cycles, allowing for faster and more precise control.The major benefits from OLED type displays comes from the high level of control that can be exerted over each pixel. Pixels can be switched completely off, allowing for deep blacks and a high contrast ratio. Being able to dim and turn off individual pixels also saves on power. The lack of other layers on top of the LEDs means that the maximum amount of light reaches the display surface, resulting in brighter images with better viewing angles.
In super AMOLED display,it incorporates the capacitive touchscreen right into the display, instead of it being a separate layer on top of the display. This makes the display thinner.
