How Does a Computer Mouse Works?

Working Principle of a Computer mouse

Every person reading this article undoubtedly have held a computer mouse in your hand. But how many of you wonder how this little device works. Here we have tried to explain 'how does a computer mouse works?'. Computer mouse is a pointing device that detects two-dimensional motion relative to a surface. This motion is typically translated into the motion of a pointer on a display.Mouse is an HID (Human Interface Device) that makes your computer easy to use.Mouse can also be viewed as a cursor control device.

Types of Computer Mouse

Mainly there are two types of 'mouses'. Ball mouse(Mechanical mouse) and Optical mouse.

How does a mechanical mouse work?

mechanical ball mouse working
A ball mouse
How does a ball mouse actually work? As you move it across your desk, the ball rolls and pushes against two plastic rollers(2) mechanically connected to thin wheels (3). One of the wheels detects movements in an back-and-forth direction (say x axis),the other detects side-to-side movements (y-axis).They how they convert this movements into signals?

when you move the mouse, the ball moves the rollers that turn one or both of the wheels. If you move the mouse straight forward or backward, only the x-axis wheel turns; if you move to the right or left, only the y-axis wheel turns. And if you move the mouse at an angle, the ball turns both wheels at once.

Each wheel has slots on their edges , as it turns, the slots repeatedly break a infrared/light beam. The more the wheel turns, the more times the beam is broken. Counting the number of times the beam is broken will give how far the wheel has turned and how far you've moved the mouse. The counting, measuring and calibration are done by the microchip inside the mouse, which sends the signals down the cable to your computer. Software in your computer moves the cursor on your monitor by a corresponding amount.

How Optical mouse works?

Optical mouse working principle is entirely different from that of mechanical mouse.
An optical mouse uses a light source, typically a light-emitting diode (LED)/LASER, and a light detector, such as an array of photodiodes, to detect movement relative to a surface.

Typical optical mouse has three major parts, a light source(LED), light guiding channel(Plastic LENS) and light detector(CMOS array).
Optical mouse parts and functions
In most of the optical mouse RED LED is the light source.Plastic light guide(LENS) channels the light from the LED at an angle, down onto the desk. Light-detector chip measures light reflected back up from the desk. This CMOS light detector is a low resolution Camera.

This CMOS array takes successive images of the surface on which the mouse operates. This successive images will be processed by a DSP(Digital signal processor).Successive images will have only small differences. So, it is possible to determine in which direction mouse has moved by comparing this images. As computing power grew cheaper, it became possible to embed more powerful special-purpose image-processing chips in the mouse itself.
working of optical mouse
Illustration of successive images captured by CMOS array
Assume this is your desktop/mouse pad surface. Let 1,2 and 3 be the images captured by light detector at different instance of time t1,t2 and t3 respectively. If image 3 comes after image 1, we can easily infer that mouse moved towards right side. If image2 follows image1 ,it means mouse has moved towards left.Like this DSP determines direction of movements.

Other variants of computer mouse

Inertial and gyroscopic mice:Often called "air mice" since they do not require a surface to operate, inertial mice use a tuning fork or other accelerometer to detect rotary movement for every axis supported
3D mice:These devices generally function through ultrasound and provide at least three degrees of freedom.

Why it is impossible to completely ban blue whale challenge ?

It is nearly impossible to ban deadly Blue Challenge,Blue whale is not a game that can be downloaded on PC or mobile

Deadly blue whale challenge game continuing its spree of takings lives across the world. Its recent victim is a 14 year boy from Mumbai,India. Like other participants he ended up with jumping off the terrace of his flat.
It is difficult to trace spread of game since its links are not found on playstore or any other site.
But the Challenge is not a game that can be downloaded on a phone or a website. You can't find a link of blue whale game anywhere on internet.Efforts by cyber experts to locate the game — on Play Store and a series of websites — yielded no results. The challenge can only be undertaken when its creators get in touch with would-be users.

Deadly Blue Whale is a 50-day-challenge.Blue Whale began in Russia in 2013 with "F57", one of the names of the so-called "death group" of the VKontakte social network(a famous social media network among Russian speaking), and allegedly caused its first suicide in 2015..It is believed that the founder of this deadly game is a 22-year-old Russian, Filipp Budeikin,a former psychology student who was expelled from his university, was arrested last November for allegedly inciting teenagers to take their lives.According Filipp Budeikin challenge aimed at "cleansing society" by eliminating "people who are worthless"by pushing them to suicide those he deemed as having no value.

The game gives a task a day — each one potentially fatal — to the player for 50 days.

The game is based on the relationship between the challengers (also called players or participants) and the administrators. It involves a series of duties given by the administrators that players must complete, usually one per day, some of which involve self-mutilation. Some tasks can be given in advance, while others can be passed on by the administrators on that day, the last task being suicide.

The list of tasks, to be completed in 50 days, includes waking up at 4:20 A.M., climbing a crane, carving a specific phrase on the person’s own hand or arm, doing secret tasks, poking a needle to the arm or leg, standing on a bridge and roof, listening to certain type of music, and watching scary and psychedelic videos sent to the challengers by the administrator.
Th administrators of the game reach out to their victims through different social medias like Instagram,Facebook,WhatsApp or any other online forums.Victims are selected based on their recent social media posts and activities. If your posts speak that you are 'feeling lonely' or ''depressed' ,then you are the perfect target. They will collect maximum personal details about you ,so that they can easily push you towards suicide  through blackmailing or other sort of psychological approaches.

A journalist from NB Bishkek news (Kyrgystan) writes in a personal account on the website about registering on Instagram as a teenage girl, then making "a couple of naive posts, depressive photos" and specific tags.
"After a day, they knocked. — Are you in Game? — Yes," the journalist writes on NB Bishkek news.

Teenagers are prime targets of this challenge. Why? ,they are willing to do anything to prove/justify/live up to a certain image. During adolescence risk taking behaviour is in its peeks. It is the age during which one seeks his own identity and role in the society and family. To get others attention they will take any risk.

A report by Radio Liberty, a US government-funded broadcasting organisation, said one of their correspondents who had signed up for the challenge as a 15-year-old asked what would happen if she wanted to get out.
The curator replied, "I have all your information. They will come after you."

Instagram and Facebook have come up with measures where a user is directed to a help page when they search for hashtags related to the Blue Whale Challenge.
"Posts with words or tags you're searching for often encourage behaviour that can cause harm and even lead to death"
Facebook search result  for 'Blue Whale'
Facebook suggests three ways to get through your difficult times
Today, internet is accessible to even small kids.Parents need to monitor their children's interests on Internet, and show them real world instead of allowing them to immerse in virtual world.

What is the need of dual rear camera in smartphones?

Dual camera system in smartphones for better photography

Using dual lens system, some  limitations of phone cameras can be overcome to an extend
Content Highlights
  • Dual Camera system in smartphones
  • Need for dual camera in smartphones
  • How dual camera system works
  • Advantages of dual camera photography in smartphones
  • Phones with dual camera system

Smartphone technologies are evolving much faster than anything else. Many leading manufacturers are rolling out dual camera smartphones for better better photography.Thickness of smartphone is less than 10mm and people always prefer slimmer phones. So, phone cameras are starting to reach some hard physical limits. To overcome this constraint phone companies are looking for alternative
means to keep improving.Dual camera is just one solution to overcome this constraint to an extend.
Dual cameras were first introduced in the HTC Evo 3D smartphone way back in 2011. At the time, the dual camera was used to capture 3D images to work with the 3D screen of the HTC.In 2015, Lenovo introduced a dual front camera in the Vibe S1 — it had a primary 8MP front camera and second 2MP front camera to capture better selfies. Vivo is the latest brand to launch a smartphone with dual front camera in the Vivo V5 Plus.

Need for Dual cameras in smart phones

When compared to other digital cameras phone cameras have got lot of limitations. They are listed below.
  • Limited optical zooming
  • Limited aperture
  • Lack of multi-focus
  • Smaller sensor size
To overcome above limitations phone companies have introduced dual cameras and dual lens cameras.

How Dual Camera Works in Smartphone

We can call main camera primary and other one secondary.Usually primary camera will be of higher pixels and secondary of lower pixel resolution. In a dual lens camera or dual camera setup one camera is used to take the pictures and the other one is to capture the depth of field. It is interesting to see that different phone manufacturers exploit secondary camera in different ways. Some manufacturers use it merely for collecting details about the image captured by primary camera while others use it also for capturing the image.

Advantages of Dual Lens Camera in Smartphones

Greater Depth of Field in Pictures

With dual lens setup you will get wider aperture if both cameras are working together. It allows more light to pass through the lenses to the sensor resulting in greater depth of field in the pictures. We have already seen, one lens is used to capture the image and the other one is used to get the depth of field.

Faster Focus

Dual lens camera give you faster Auto-focus (~ 0.1 seconds) which is not possible in single lens camera smartphone.

Refocus

Refocusing means 'focusing the picture even after the shot has been taken'Dual camera can allow you to refocus the picture. The secondary camera helps to perform refocus functionality.

Bokeh effect

bokeh effect

You can also create the bokeh effect by blurring the out of focus parts or background of a picture. Image processing software also plays a large part in creating this effect.

Better Picture Clarity in low light conditions

Dual Camera Smartphones can takes better quality pictures in low light conditions. This is because dual lenses allow more light to pass to the sensor which results in better picture clarity in areas with low light.

Better Noise reductions and sharpness

By comparing the inputs from primary and secondary cameras special algorithms can easily detect and reduce the noise in the final output.

Disadvantages of rear/front Dual Camera Smartphones

  • Currently dual lens cameras have been designed mainly for high quality photography. Videography has not been benefited by this system so far.
  • Higher cost due to addition of hardware and software.

Now, let’s us have a look at some smartphones that have a Dual-lens rear camera setup.

The exploit, involves a complex vCard, which is a transferable Address Book contact.Whereas typical vCards feature 200-300 lines of code, the developer’s vCard reportedly includes 14,281. As a result, when Messages tries to open the vCard, the app crashes.A bug in Apple's iOS won't allow the iMessage app to move past this huge file.

How this iPhone Message crash works.

When you click the vCard received, iOS want to read the text, the text in the file is very complicated for the system and cause a CPU average: the app freeze. You close the app, want to reopen but iOS want to reload the previous message but can’t because it’s the vcf file.
This video from vincedes3 will explain it better.

These crashes are not a one-time event, unfortunately — they happen every time you open Messages, since the app tries to open the most recent message. As such, restarting the phone or the app will not work, since the cycle will repeat itself.

Want to try this iOS message crash?

Try at your own risk!
vincedes3 explains the process as follows.
  • Download the file here
  • Upload it to iCloud Drive, Dropbox etc.. (just if you want to keep it)
  • Share the file to send it via Message
  • Send it to your victim
  • Wait for the victim click on it, the Message application freeze and don’t work anymore.

How to fix iPhone Message app crash?

Vincedes3 also provides fix for this crash.
Clicking on this link triggers a process that is supposed to fix the crash and return the iMessage app to its original working state.

How Fingerprint Scanners in mobile phones Work?

Fingerprint Scanners in smart phones

fingerprint scanners in mobile phones
Latest smartphones like google pixel feature capacitance sensor based fingerprint scanners.
Content Highlights
  • Fingerprint scanners in smartphones
  • Structure and working of fingerprint sensors in smartphones
Underlying technology of Fingerprint Scanners in smart phones are quite different from ordinary fingerprint sensors.Fingerprint sensors can be broadly classified into two.Optical sensors and capacitive sensors.
An optical fingerprint sensor is an electronic device used to capture a digital image of the fingerprint pattern. This image is digitally processed to create a biometric template (a collection of extracted features) which is stored and used for matching.Fingerprint sensors in modern smartphones are capacitive sensors.
The diagram below shows a simple capacitive finger print sensor. The sensor is an array of tiny sensing cells. Each cell has two conductor plates.Working of this sensors are similar to the working of touch sensors.
structure of capacitive finger scanners
capacitance based finger print sensor cells
The sensor is connected to an electronic circuit which sense even minute current variations.Working of this sensing circuit is beyond the scope of this article.Main component of this sensing circuit is an amplifier which amplifies the minute current variations. You might have studied in your high school physics "The factors affecting capacitance":
  • Plate Area.
  • Plate Spacing ( distance between the plates )
  • Dielectric Material.
Finger you are placing over the sensor will act as dielectric. When finger's ridges are placed over conductive plates, it increase the capacitance between plates, while an air gap(valley) will leave the charge at the capacitor relatively unchanged. In short the capacitor in a cell under a ridge will have a greater capacitance than the capacitor in a cell under a valley.Variation in capacitance will result in current flow. This variation is amplified by the sensing circuit. This analog signals are converted into digital signals using an ADC(Analog to Digital Converters) and required signal processing is carried out to extract the feature of a fingerprint.

Technologies used in Google Pixel smartphone

Finally Google launched its own branded smartphone ,Google Pixel.Let us have a look at some unique features and technologies used in  Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL
Google pixel and Google pixel XL have incorporated various modern technologies to give an edge over its rivals.

Camera

According to google "The highest rated smartphone camera. Ever. With a best-ever 89 DxOMark Mobile score, Pixel's camera lets you take brilliant photos in low light, bright light or any light"
Main camera has 12.3MP
Google Pixel comes with a 12.3MP primary camera
Phase detection autofocus:The phase detection/AF system is a very complex system that sees improvements pretty much every time when a higher end camera line is refreshed. Over the years, the number of autofocus points have been increasing, as well as the number of more reliable cross-type autofocus points.
Laser detection autofocus:It makes use of laser sensor system to adjust the focus of the handset's rear camera.
Google Pixel combines Phase detection and Laser detection to improve auto focusing capabilities of its rear camera.
f/2.0 Aperture:What does an "f/2.0 lens" mean?-Simply put, it's the ratio between the focal length of the lens and the aperture / hole that lets light through the lens into the camera. For example, an f/2.0, 50mm lens would have a aperture/hole diameter of 25mm.So the large the 'f' number, the smaller the opening.So,f/2.0 lens in a Google Pixel/Google Pixel XL   lets a lot of light through.
Sensor size:Large 1.55μm pixels-smaller pixels means higher clarity
Geo-tagging:You can add geographical identification metadata to photographs.
Secondary camera:8 MP, f/2.4 Aperture,Sensor size: 1.4 µm pixel

The first phone with the Google Assistant built in.

What is Google Assistant?-Google Assistant is Google's latest virtual assistant. It is designed to be personal voice assistant.
Here's how Google explains its new assistant:
"The assistant is conversational - an ongoing two-way dialogue between you and Google that understands your world and helps you get things done. It makes it easy to buy movie tickets while on the go, to find that perfect restaurant for your family to grab a quick bite before the movie starts, and then help you navigate to the theater."

How google assistant works

Google Assistant is designed to be conversational. That means you can ask a question and then ask several follow-up questions, and Google Assistant will be able to keep track of the conversation, determine context, and audibly respond with the right information.

For example, you can ask what you should have for dinner, and Google Assistant will locate local places to eat and serve up suggestions, with cards for a selection of restaurants.
Here's how Google Assistant works across the different Google devices.

Unlimited storage for all your photos and videos.

Anyone can download and install Google Photos on their iOS or Android phone. But the photo storage service caps photo resolution at 16 megapixels and video resolution at full HD (1,920 x 1,080) if you want to store an unlimited amount of media for free.
This means if you want to store higher resolution photos and videos at greater resolution (like 4K), you'd need to pay for a monthly storage plan.
With unlimited photo and video storage and their highest resolutions, the Pixel phones are an attractive value for people who want to store their memories in full forever.

Switching

It’s easier than ever to switch.
Switching enables you to transfer data from your existing phone to google pixel
Connect your old iPhone or Android device to your new Pixel with the Quick Switch Adapter.Switching from iPhone, Sign in to your Google Account. If you don't already have one, you'll be asked to create one.
Switching from Android, then your new Pixel should automatically sign you in to your Google Account, but if not, simply enter your password.
Once you’ve signed in to your Google Account, choose what you want to move, like your contacts, calendar events, photos, videos, music, SMS messages, iMessages and more. Then sit back and let Pixel do the work.
Supported devices include:

  • iPhone or iPad running iOS 8 and up
  • Nexus 5, 6, 5X, 6P running Android 5.0 and up
  • Most Android devices running Android 5.0 and up

AMOLED capacitive Multi-touch Display

AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode):The key component in an LED display types is a Light Emitting Diode (LED)the key component in these display types is a Light Emitting Diode (LED). In an LED display panel these are shrunk down dramatically and arranged in red, green and blue clusters to create an individual pixel that can reproduce white light and various colors.
Layers of an AMOLED display
The O in OLED stands for organic. There are a series of thin organic material films placed between two conductors in each LED, which is then used to produce light when a current is applied.AM part in AMOLED stands in for Active Matrix, rather than a passive matrix technology. In a passive matrix, a complex grid system is used to control individual pixels, where integrated circuits control a charge sent down each column or row. But this is rather slow and can be imprecise. Active Matrix systems attach a thin film transistor (TFT) and capacitor to each LED. This way, when a row and column is activated to access a pixel, the capacitor at the correct pixel can retain its charge in between refresh cycles, allowing for faster and more precise control. The major benefits from OLED type displays comes from the high level of control that can be exerted over each pixel. Pixels can be switched completely off, allowing for deep blacks and a high contrast ratio. Being able to dim and turn off individual pixels also saves on power. The lack of other layers on top of the LEDs means that the maximum amount of light reaches the display surface, resulting in brighter images with better viewing angles.
In super AMOLED display,it incorporates the capacitive touchscreen right into the display, instead of it being a separate layer on top of the display. This makes the display thinner.

16M colors:Pixel supports True color 24-bit representation or for a total of 224 or 16,777,216 color variations.
Resolution 1440 x 2560 pixels (~534 ppi pixel density):Pixel density (PPI) Refers to the concentration of pixels on a particular display, measured in pixels per inch (ppi). Pixel density is calculated by dividing the diagonal pixel resolution of a display by its diagonal size.
Multitouch:Multi-touch is a method of input on a touchscreen that allows two or more fingers to be used on the screen at one time.
Protection Corning Gorilla Glass 4:This prevents possible scratches.
